Synopsis
These twelve short stories differ in tone – some are feather-light, others deeper – but they all have in common a truly Austenesque voice.
(According to PUBLISHERS WEEKLY: “McVeigh’s prose and plotting are pitch perfect”. Alice’s most recent review in U.S. REVIEW OF BOOKS: “McVeigh makes the reader wonder if this is indeed Jane Austen’s lost companion to her original work.”)
PRIDE AND PERJURY will be honoured at March 2025’s UK Selfie Awards, where it is shortlisted. A current finalist too in Chanticleer International’s Book Awards, it has also won the Global Book Awards (gold in both historical fiction and book series), silver in Poynter’s Global ebook Awards, and was selected by Shelf Unbound as one of the 100 best Indies – fiction and non-fiction – of 2024.
The short stories vary from Caroline Bingley’s rather annoyed diaries, to the housekeeper (Hill’s) personal version of P&P, to the story Jane Austen denied us, of exactly how and why Lydia eloped with Wickham.
“A spirited addition… With inventive creativity, compact world-building and a smooth flow, these twelve enchanting stories add new facets to Austen’s beloved landscapes.”
Foreword Clarion Reviews Rated 5/5.
“Absorbing, delightful, technically flawless and loyally Austenian, PRIDE AND PERJURY boasts inspired interpretations of minor characters and off-page events – some of which Austen only hinted at.”
INDIEREADER editorial review. Rated 4.9/5
“Freshly imagined – could have come straight from Austen’s pen. McVeigh spins a marvellous illusion, uniquely echoing Austen’s own spirit of wit.”
SPR, editorial review. Rated 4.7/5
“Alice McVeigh’s narrative is perfectly pitched, capturing Austen’s authorial voice without ever descending into pastiche. Employing that coolly ironic gaze, she describes events ‘omitted’ from Pride and Prejudice with remarkable conviction.”
