Synopsis

Surviving King Henry’s ill will, Simon is sent as ambassador to France, but returns to rescue Prince Edward — and becomes enmeshed in the barons’ rebellion against the king. When the barons abandon their own project, it is Simon who is left to virtually single-handedly establish the new government: a Parliament with representatives elected by the common people and with power over the Crown. This book traces how modern democracy actually came into being.
